I began writing this blog as a way to record my progress renovating an old Dolls House Emporium Classical dolls house which I built from a kit in the 1980's. It has now evolved into a blog about my ever increasing collection of dolls houses and the items I buy and make to put in them.

Hope you enjoy it.

Fitting the Dormer Windows to Magpies

Haven't had much time for mini-ing this week as I started an evening class on scrapbooking a couple of weeks ago and had to write some of my journaling.

Today I managed to get the dormer windows fitted to the front roof section. Had to file the inside corners of the external window frames (the yellow part) to get the blue frames into the gap. It is all glued in place now and waiting to dry.On Monday I managed to get to the Sue Ryder shop in town. Had planned to buy some lights but they didn't have a very good selection this time. Did get a transformer and socket strip though and some wood effect flooring for inside Jenny Wren's so wasn't a useless trip :).

Painting around stairs is not a good idea!

Finally finished painting the ground floor and around the stairs of Jenny Wren's, took 3 coats of emulsion using a mini roller to get a good even coverage. Couldn't use the roller on the stair wall though as it was too big so had to use paint brushes instead. To anyone about to start building a kit house I recommend decorating before gluing in the stairs ;). Also got round to gluing all the acetates into the windows of Magpies. The small paint pots are just to hold the acetates down while the glue sets. Tomorrow afternoon I am off to the Grampian Miniaturists Club in Kemnay, Aberdeenshire where I think we are making a polar bear rug :).

Purchases from Delph Miniatures

Wanted to buy some items for my new mini hair salon from Delph Miniatures but after seeing the prices thought I would try and find some cheaper items I could maybe use first. Still put in an order but for items I know I wont be able to make i.e. a red espresso machine for the cafe, a pink laptop for the the hair salon bookings, an ironing board and steam iron (couldn't resist these) and a pack of pink toilet rolls, lol.

Magpies Internal Doors & Theme for Jenny Wren's

Magpies - Here are some photos of the internal doors, oak varnished and glued in position.
This one is the door through from the living room to the kitchen or it could be the kitchen to the living room (haven't decided yet). I stupidly drilled the hole for the door knob on the hinge side of the door (if you look very closely at the photo you can see the tiny hole) but thankfully it isn't noticable now it is fitted in the house, phew. This is the bathroom door with lock, lol.
Jenny Wren's - Have finally decided on a theme for Jenny Wren's, yeh! Originally I had thought of turning it into a dog groomers with pet shop above but I would have had to make nearly everything myself as there isn't a lot of miniature pet stuff to buy yet. I didn't want to make it into just another house so next I thought of doing some sort of shop but would have had to buy loads of stuff to fill it which could take me years. Last night I finally got inspired after watching Coronation Street of all things and have decided to do a hair and beauty salon. The hair salon will be downstairs and the beauty salon upstairs with a nail bar and maybe even a spray tanning booth, lol. I am planning to decorate it in a trendy/girly/modern style with lots of grey and silver but with a bit of pink thrown in. Looking forward to sourcing some chic modern items for it too. Delph Miniatures have some fantastic items but they are quite expensive so might try making a few things. Can't wait to get started on it now but need to finish building Magpies first ;).

Started Decorating Magpies & Jenny Wren's

Magpies is coming together nicely. Decided to decorate the inside before putting in the stairs this time to make it easier. Painted the internal partitions and the ground floor in 'gentle yellow' emulsion as I already had the paint and amazingly it is the exact same colour as the outside. Also used the same paint for the ground floor of Jenny Wren's too but had to paint around the stairs which was quite tricky. Think I might have to put shelves or a cupboard under the stairs to hide the bad paint job.
Managed to buy the correct internal doors for Magpies from Hobbycraft which saved me sending for them and having to pay postage. Also bought door knobs which were in a box of half price DHE items. They also had skirtings and cornices at half price but as I wasn't sure how many I would need I didn't buy them. Might have to make another trip back sometime this week ;).

Have stained the internal doors using a water based oak varnish and they now look fantastic.

Magpies Build Day 2

Started to glue the main carcase together. The back panel wasn't very securely fixed but I though once it was glued in place it would be OK. Had a bit of trouble with the second floor section as it wouldn't fit correctly in the pre-cut groove so had to file it wider by 1mm.As the second floor hadn't fitted properly the grooves on the left hand side panel were also out by 1mm. I had to also file these grooves 1mm wider using my new mini rotary tool, fitted with one of the sanding attachments. That worked a treat and it all slotted together perfectly. I am presuming that the house will be 1mm taller on one side than the other but as it is such a slight difference I hope it won't be noticed. To make decorating easier I decided to just paint the internal partitions rather than try wallpapering them. I already had a similar coloured yellow emulsion paint to that used on the pre-painted DH parts. I had to do 3 coats of paint using a mini paint roller.Tomorrow I will paint the other sides of the internal partitions and have decided to also paint the bottom floor walls with the same yellow paint. Still need to decide on wallpaper for the upper floors and am going to order internal doors from DHE. This will be my first DH with internal doors :-).

Magpies Build Day 1

Here is Jenny Wrens built but still without the hinges fitted on the front as I want to decorate inside first. Wish I had not now glued the stairs in place as that would also have made the decorating easier but at least I now know what not to do when building Magpies ;). I have put Jenny Wrens upstairs until I have finished building Magpies as then I can decorate them both at the same time.Magpies Day 1 - Finally got round to unpacking Magpies and checking the parts supplied. The only damaged part was the main window & door frame which had to be re-glued together and has a slight chip (where the masking tape is) but this is not really noticable and is on the inside anyway.
Dry build of main carcase done to see where everything goes.
The back board is in 2 pieces which have to be glued together and left flat to dry. I put some heavy books on top to hold it flat.
This is what it should look like when finished :).

Jenny Wren's Hinge Problems :(.

Just when I though things were going so well too! The proper hinges arrived from DHE yesterday and this morning I went to fit them. Marked where to position them and drilled pilot holes as in instructions but when I screwed in one of the screws it cracked the mdf, aargh :'(. I phoned DHE again and was told to use a bigger drill bit but to fill the crack and clamp it together for 24 hours first.

I put a bigger drill bit onto my drill and drilled bigger pilot holes for the second hinge but it has cracked too so have had to glue that one as well >:(. Maybe I should have stuck to using the first lot of hinges instead as all the screw holes are on the side and not on the edge so it wouldn't have cracked the mdf. Bit worried now about using them on Magpies???
